MyBlogLog, Community And Gravatar Alternative

December 24th, 2006 by Franky · // Permalink

What would this blog be without the occasional new internet service post?

I have been aware since several weeks already of MyBlogLog, actually I even have used their service when I was still used Blugger Blogger.

Not that long ago MyBlogLog changed their whole platform and turned into a community. Since then their Alexa rank rocketed and the community has been growing.

Not only does MyBlogLog allow you to put a table (d@mmit, a table!) of the recent visitors to your site1, but also you can use it as a replacement for the gravatar icons on your site. There also is a plug-in for WP2 already.
After the Gravatar debacle3 this is a great plus for MyBlogLog. Since the service is expected to be acquired by Yahoo! one shouldn’t fear the same problems too soon.

On a sidenote, the possible acquisition by Yahoo! has an interesting detail to it : MyBlogLog uses the Amazon S3 storage service for image hosting. I wonder if Yahoo! would keep this that way.

1 Only MyBlogLog members tho. See sidebar.
2 The standard plug-in does not generate valid XHTML code yet, like on this site.4
3 The situation has gotten better lately, but Gravatar has caused problems regularly.
4 Will soon be integrated in the new design. ;-)

I am surprised this hasn’t become more popular yet and I expect MyBlogLog surely to become a new kind of MySpace within several months, but untill then… why not enjoy it.

At least the MyBlogLog avatars are less annoying than Gravatar.com
