Tumblr, Projects and Too Much I WANT To Do

May 8th, 2007 by Franky · // Permalink

So Basically I am enjoying a week of freedom, a week working from home, without having too much to do, for work that is.

I am enjoying it, it’s relaxing and I surely enjoy playing with my newest toy : my tumblelog at tumblr.com.
When I discovered tumblr, I loved the idea of importing feeds and thought it would be a perfect option to make a lifestream but I didn’t like the customization level. Or rather, I do love how customizable tumblr is, but it wasn’t good enough for a lifestream. I like to be able to give every feed its own color and with a little help of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and WP knowledge this is pretty easy to do. But not with tumblr.

So after some days of brainstorming, I came up with a good usage for my tumblelog : tumble whatever, but mostly the music I listen to.
I have a healthy collection of more than 1300 albums right now and there hardly is a moment of the day when I’m not listening to music. And that moment would be when I sleep anyway.
So in my best act of consistency, I will try as regularly as possible to add the covers of the albums I actually listen to.

One of the great features of tumblr is that you can enjoy the same design freedom as fe. Blogspot offers.
I am also looking forward to the day when tumblr implements a comment feature.

And maybe some day, I’ll even review music albums. :)

On another note, here’s my planning for a week without anything much to do (pretty much in order of appearance)

  • Make a new design for Heather.
She wants the same but with another header and some graphics. It’ll be the same with another header, but different.
  • Come with some designs (mainly different color schemes) for my own blogs here.
  • Create a complete stock management system (in MS effing Acccess) for the charity.
This means collaboration with 13 different local groups and get them in to online collaboration. This will bring me gray hair!
  • Listen to all the new music I bought.
    This might be the hardest!
  • Set up some more blogs and build a complete lifestream, with design, on WP.
  • And last but not least, I’d love to learn Django. Mainly because I am starting to get sick of WP Automattic.

That’s all.

I’ve never been interested in lifestream websites. Or I should say I’ve never looked at, mostly because I’m afraid of loosing my life here.

There is however a point of your post that I’m interested in: Django. After having just read the overview page, it looks awesome ! Ctrl+D

    Thanks for that.

Djizeus, the point about the lifestream is following : I submit the music I listen to to last.fm, I use bookmark engines, I blog, I comment (occasionally) on different sites, aso aso.
Why can’t I just collect everything in one place, still using all those services?

Lose my life? Nah thanks, I’ve shared quite some and every day has proven it’s a fuckin’ error. ;-)

Oh… and yes, I have been looking at Django for quite some time now and I am totally impressed by it!

I just happened upon Tumblr a few wees ago too. I’m pretty sure that you can do some pretty rich customization, but I simply don’t know all the available hooks. I think they are going for minimalism with tumblr (it’s based off of wordpress), so I am not sure how likely it will be that they’ll add comments.

Stve, I hear you. I also found it rather annoying that there was no guide with all the hooks, but I then printed out all the standard themes and found them pretty easy to understand actually.
I remember having read somewhere (tumblr blog?) that they are working on a total new way of commenting. :)
