It was that time of the year time for it again. After many years I needed a new processor for my computer. Just as usual, for years I had only been upgrading components, but Windows Vista, which I have been (alpha/beta) testing for almost 4 years pushed me to a new computer.
Vista didn’t really, even not me as power user who minimally needs 1200MB RAM1 for daily usage under Vista without actually doing anything, but I wanted to enjoy Oblivion and Gothic 3 more2. Especially latter needed some more CPU power.
So time to upgrade!
Just as always the only thing that mainly interested me was a processor fast enough to run actual games and with some power to push it. But it didn’t need to be the latest engine.
And off was I… to ebay. Several weeks of bidding later I ended up with an awesome deal: Intel Pentium D 950 – 3.4Ghz, 2*2MB L2 Cache and 65nm. I thought that would do the job for the next 3-4 years, and together some faster memory would be perfect. For less than $400 I won an auction for all this, together with a 250 SATA HDD, 1GB RAM3 and 18 DVD-DLRW.
What more does one need?
I still have a pretty kick ass graphics card4 I wanted to use, so everything perfect. And I even got a fancy case with the whole package.
I don’t really like the schmancy blue leds and would have cut them off, but then again the Miss loves them and I guess that’s what it’s all about to plan to share life together. Blue leds!
Since I was late this year and didn’t get an appointment at the hospital anymore to get my chocolate eggs for Eastern, I’ll have to take care of getting an egghead now and then I think everything is ready for the move.
What would a new life be without a new computer?
1 I only had a P4 2.8Ghz Hyper Threading with 4GB! This now serves as media server and soon will be the Love’s new computer.
2 Of course also Spellforce (1,2 and add-ons) can always use some more CPU power. :D
3 Working for a huge company with many, many computers has its advantages. Expect this number to increase by the end of the day.

Avi, imgaine even this system doesn’t offer me more than 20 fraps/sec in Gothic 3.
